Welcome to Department of Surgery

Dear students,

You rotation in general surgery will be for a period of 17 weeks. During your rotation, you should be exposed to the following:

  • Bedside teaching (patient problem presentation).
  • Operative sessions.
  • Active participation in ward activities.
  • On-call duties and emergencies (1 per week) (15 on-calls).
  • Anatomy sessions (Mondays at 1:30 pm-2:30 pm each week).
  • Problem solving sessions (Sundays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 1:30 pm each week - as per the schedule on the notice board).

The following documentation should be completed and submitted to secretary of department of surgery before the end of surgical rotation:

  • 2 wrok-ups of 2 patients with different surgical problems.
  • 5 descriptions of 5 different operations.
  • Critical appraisal of 1 article or searching the evidence for 1 to 5 questions.
  • Log book duly completed and signed by the supervisor.

The weekly schedule for problem solving sessions will be displayed on the notice board, please attend the sessions, in case of any changes, the information will be updated on the notice board. Remember to take the handout relevant to that day's session with you.

Students are required to purchase their own theatre growns. These may be puchased or tailor made.

Attention to All Students

All medical students are expected to dress appropriately (white overcoat and student identification card). A professional image increases credibility and safety while fostering patient trust, respect and confidence. Non-adherence to the dress code can have negative effects on patient care and could diminish the reputation of the medical school and its affiliated hospitals.

Students doing their training at or SMC, please adhere to the policies of the hospital concerned (on dress code and identification requirements). The medical school will no take any responsibility for any negligence shown by students in this matter.
