Introduction

Unit VII consists of two sub-units: the musculoskeletal and integumentary (skin) systems. Seven problems are focused on the musculoskeletal system and two problems on the integumentary system. Each problem is presented over one week.

As with the other units you have already completed, this unit is organized in a way, which encourages you to:

  • Integrate structural organization of each system with its normal function.
  • Explain common disorders, which affect the components of each system in terms of altered structure and function.
  • Explain the clinical presentation of, and the diagnostic procedures for these disorders.
  • Understand the principles of conservative and surgical management, including rehabilitation of patients presenting with these disorders.
  • Advise individuals and the community on the preventive measures to be taken against the primary disorder and its secondary effects.

As you study this unit, always think in terms of your own body, the daily activities you undertake, the physical exercise and sports you participate in the posture that you maintain whether you are sitting, standing or lying down, and the way in which you care for your skin.

As this is one of the last three units you will undertake in the pre-clinical phase, you should always try to relate what you have learnt in previous units with what you will be learning in this unit. Also remember that this unit is very closely related to the next unit, dealing with the nervous system. The knowledge and skills you would gsin from this unit would help you to understand unit VIII better.
