Student Guidelines
- The students must wear their white lab coat along with ID card and the ID should be clearly seen during their presence in AGU and their teaching hospitals (SMC, BDF).
- Meet with the tutor on the first day of their rotation and agree on a plan of action.
- Follow working hours of the hospital where clerkship is conducted (7:30 am to clerk the patient). Register your attendance with the department secretary every morning.
- Attend all departmental activities conducted in the hospital.
- At 7:30 am, the students should work up patients in the area assigned to them and discuss the histories taken and the clinical cases with the tutor concerned to their rotation.
- Each student is expected to present one case per week and discuss the relevant topic. All the other students should come prepared to enrich the discussion.
- Take 10 night calls, weekend and holiday duties by rotation and as per schedule produced by the clinical tutor.
- Attend all bed-side rounds with the tutor and residents.
- Attend all assigned activities such as obstetric ultrasound, labour ward, theater... etc.
- Register all the activities attended, case history write-ups and skills acquired in the log book and make sure that these are verified and signed by the clinical tutor.
- All students are required to attend the problem solving sessions on Sunday and Thursday.
- Students must prepare a portfolio consisting of not less than five researched topics (critical appraisal) in Obs & Gyn., not less than five theater notes and a record of at least five cases with your comment on the management of each case.
- Maintain the highest ethical standards when dealing with patients, their families and colleagues, maintain confidentiality and professionalism, be sensitive to needs, feelings and personal choices of his or her patients and be compassionate and kind to colleagues, patients and their families.
- The students should take permission from the ward-in-charge nurse to look into the medical files and to take history and examination of the patient.
- The male students should have a female student or nurse with him when he goes to clerk a female patient.
- During ward rounds or in theater rooms, student should contact themselves with the utmost propriety and they are not allowed to take any photographs.
- Photocopying of the reports or documents from the patient's file are strictly prohibited (AGU & MOH rules).
- If the students fail to follow the above instructions (13-16) and if we receive any complaint, he/she will be subjected to investigation committee where the rules and regulations of the university apply.
- End of clerkship examination is conducted the last week of the rotation.
- To attend the operating room in second floor in SMC, you have to change temporary AGU ID card to theater ID card from the Gynec secretary.
Portfolio
Guidlines for editing the portfolio:
- To avoid copying from computer formats of history taking, each case discussed should be signed by the tutor concerned (5 cases).
- Brief note about follow up.
- To add personnel reflection on each clinical case.
- Operation notes/ signed by chief resident and/or consultant (5 notes).
- Critical apprasial should be related to the cases in the portfolio and should have your personal reflection (5 cases).
It has come to our notice that writing of portfolio become inconsistent and inadequate with the aims of the undergraduate curriculum. Therefore, we would like to emphasize the following important guidelines.
In including cases of history taking, the following should be made:
- To include the name of patients, CPR number, ward number, bed number, the name of the supervising consultant and the date of admission to the hospital and the date of history taking.
- A summary of professional diagnosis, workup, the results of the investigations and the management in the hospital.
- Photocopying of the reports or documents fron the patient's file should not be done (MOH rules).
- To avoid copying from computer formats of history taking, each case should be signed by the tutor concerned.
- Brief note about follow up.
- To add personal reflection on each case.
- Critical appraisals should be related to the cases in the potfolio.
